Parks, Lakes, Rivers, & Bike Trails
One of the greatest things about Michigan is that the outdoors is always calling!
Local Weather & Environment
Chelsea is a Pure Michigan Trail Town, signifying the area's commitment to outdoor recreation and natural beauty. This charming and historical town is located in southeast Michigan. There are 15 lakes within a 10 minute drive of downtown Chelsea as well as myriad parks, trails, and camping areas within the vicinity, making this city a hub for nature and nature enthusiasts. The Waterloo Recreation Area is the largest state park in the lower peninsula and features the DTE mountain bike trail network.
Summer daytime temperatures in Southeastern Michigan typically range between 79 and 91 degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime temperatures are generally between 57 and 63 degrees Fahrenheit. Michigan weather can change quickly, and heatwaves or cold snaps can exceed these averages. Rain (from drizzle to thunderstorms) is common in mid-summer and the humidity is reliably high (morning averages >80%). Humidity greatly compounds the heat (see Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) and proper hydration is advised. Likewise, sunhats and sunscreen.
The abundant wetlands and forests support abundant deer, mink, muskrats, sandhill cranes, blue herons and great horned owls. In addition to these magnificent creatures, you’ll also encounter mosquitoes, deer flies, and ticks in the wild. Applying bug repellent (with DEET or picaridin) is highly advisable in nature areas, especially at dusk.
Tick bite prevention measures are also recommended. Poison ivy (found in woodlands and elsewhere) and poison sumac (found in swamps and marshes) can cause itching, a red rash and blisters. Here is how to
identify, avoid, and treat exposure. Poison oak is not present in Michigan.
